The announcement came in light of numerous user complaints citing computer crashes and/or constant reboot cycles following the recent installation of the latest automatic download.
The source of the problem lies with a specific file (known only as KB937287), which is necessary for the downloading of Microsoft Vista Service Pack 1 ( SP1) update.
Nick White, Vista program manager, said "We made the decision to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update," but did not offer any reason nor did he confirm the errors reported by users.
The file "KB937287" is one of three integral files that existing Windows Vista must have on their systems in order to enable the installation of Vista SP1, which will deliver more than 300 fixes and enhancements to Microsoft’s latest iteration of the Windows Operating System.
However, the problem shouldn't be too much for Microsoft to handle, which still has around a month before SP1 becomes available for manual downloading.
Microsoft Vista SP1 automatic updates should resume in a few weeks.

To allay fears & pandemonium, it sure would have been be nice for M$ to shed some light on why this *bad* file is borking some systems & not others, or more along the lines of which type of systems x64 or x32 & what types of hardware are most vulnerable & more likely to encounter this issue so people don't abruptly go into panic mode.

That happened to me. I had the updates install and when it had the computer reboot, it took a long time saying it was configuring updates. I had to power it down and then when I booted it back up, it was going to try again. I eventually had to boot it in to safe mode. In safe mode it still tried to configure the updates, but it was able to finish configuring them and then the computer rebooted. I looked in update history and it said that KB937287 and another update failed installation. I tried it again and I finally got it to work.

alot of issues with the prereg. I would have to say install the service pack as a whole. And just the give you guys a heads up, KIS is not going to work with the sp1, I had to do a fresh install and then install KIS that way it wouldn't fail after the Sp. Microsoft might of fixed that but I am not going to figure that one out since I already installed the SP1.

A lot of people were upset that it came in a windows update form people downlaoded sp1 via windows update and found out that it wasn't sp1 final but sp1 beta. Microsoft has since then pulled it off from windows update.
