Maximum RAM

OS: Windows Vista Business
CPU/Ram: Pentium 4/3.2GHz DualCore
Product: Sony Vaio VGC-RC204
Comment:

This is more of a general question about RAM but I'll ask it in the Vista forum anyway since it's what I'm running...

I have a Sony Vaio VGC-RC204 Media Centre which I have recently upgraded to Windows Vista Business edition. However, I also now want to put more RAM in the system to improve the performance which Vista has taken away, so I decided that I might as well upgrade to the maximum I can.

Now, since it's 32bit then the maximum is four yes?

Well, at the moment I can only afford to put a new 2gig in, so that's no problem- 1gig of DDR2 PC4200 Non-ECC Unbufferred 533Mhz memory in each of the remaining two slots (the other two are taken up with two 512 sticks).

However, the Sony Vaio support page for this system says that the maximum memory is 2048Mb. (See http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/tuto...

However, if I google it then many other sites say that the maximum memory is four gigs (see http://www.orcalogic.co.uk/asp/prod...

I also emailed Crucial and they said that it was four. So I'm a bit confused about a few things:
- Firstly, what is the maximum memory that this machine can handle? Is it possible to exceed the maximum memory said by Sony?
- Must I pair the memory for it to actually work?
- And if so, can I do a pair of 512 and a pair of gig sticks to reach the 3 gig mark?

Thanks.

All help appreciated.

According to Sony, Sony Vaio VGC-RC204 is designed to support up to 2GB RAM (4 sticks, 516MB modules). Look HERE for the OFFICIAL info.

I know- I wrote and linked to that in my previous message.

My question was just asking whether it would be able to handle more.

Especially since Crucial and other sites say that it can handle double that.

Thanks.

The link you gave is for RC102 - it's not showing anything. The one I gave you is for RC204. Always follow the manufacturer's (i.e. Sony) recommendation.

Sorry to double post, but this page also says it can take 4gb:

Sighs... heed the important notes mentioned: You can only use the memory that is intended for this Sony VAIO. Otherwise feel free to do whatever you wish.

With 32bit you can only use 2Gb with Vista. 4Gb can be handled if you have 64bit, otherwise you cannot go above 2Gb

Wrong, rousou... the maximum amount able to be addressed by 32-bit CPUs is 4GB, and if his machine supported upto that amount then 4GB he could have.

Ok.

Well.

If I put in 3 gigs of RAM what will happen?

Will it work or not?

Because almost every other site which has RAM for this machine says it can do 4 gigs.

It wasn't long ago that most systems because of the OS didn't support more than 2 gig.

It would be difficult to determine if the system does support 4G unless Sony offered it or they offered support for it. Ram pages may be correct by they don't warranty their advice.

It may or may not work. It may smoke test your board.

My guess since it is ddr2 and the fact that it has 4 slots would be to try the 4G.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

By smoke test do you mean actually make it smoke?

Would this damage permanently?

I guess if it does I can charge it to Crucial since they've already said it can take 4 gigs ;).

Well I reckon I'll give it a try, unless anyone strongly advises me against it?

I'm just confused as to way all other sites say it can do 4gig.

Thanks.

From SONY:

"Any damage that might occur due to upgrading the memory of your VAIO will NOT be covered by the warranty"

I just went to the Crucial website & also the PNY website & the Sony Vaio VGC-RC204 isn't even listed...where are you coming up with 4GB?

Not that it's a nice way... but why not goto best buy and buy 4GB of ram for your system... install it and see what happens.. if it runs and IDs all 4GB... then you know it works... if it only supports 2GB either the system won't boot or you'll only see 2GB... when you're done testing return the RAM.... now you know.

However... it's usually best to follow the manufacture website since they're usually correct on the max ram.

I am getting the 4gb from the following email:

-------------
James,

Thank you for your email. Your system takes PC2-4200 Non ECC, DDR2. You have 4GB and 4 slots for memory. See the link I have provided below that shows the memory with these specifications. Your system takes the same as the one listed below.

Right, well just thought I'd let you all know:- I went ahead and ordered two gig sticks from Crucial and installed them this afternoon along side my 2x512.

Everything is ok and is running at 3gb RAM.

Thanks for all your help!
