I have just purchased this system last week, and intermittently it will not resume from when it is in sleep mode. What is worse, is that it will not respond at all and
I have to completely unplug the system for it to even turn back on when I press the power button. Is this an issue I shuold return the system because of, or is it possibly a bios issue?

Additionally, I have changed the suspend mode in the bios from S3, which powers down most components and the fans, to S1, hoping that the less "deep sleep" state would resolve the issue. This has not seemed to have any effect. I have also changed windows power management to not put the computer into Hibernate mode until there has been no activity for 24 hours. This also has not had any effect on the issue.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. This is the first pre-built system I have purchased and I am starting to regret it. There is surprisingly little information out there on this system yet.

Try updating the video card drivers. If you do a search, you will find many reasons for sleep mode issues.

The video drivers are the most current offering directly from Nvidia. I am aware of the wonders of searching for issues similiar to those you are experiencing. If there was a readily available answer to be found on the internet, I would not have posted with this issue in the first place.

Take back this Gateway desktop to wherever you purchased it and demand replacement or refund.
