Hi everyone,
my brother has a Dell machine with Windows Vista Home Basic, what he wants to do on this machine is, create a new user account that he can customise a bit, let me explain, his neighbours kid plays online games on his machine using the admin account, my brother has notice some things bein gaccidently deleted from his computer, so what he wants to do its create a new account with limited permissions and with the following
1) Can not delete files
2) Can not create folders
3) can not install software
4) can play online gamesi dont use Vista myself so not sure what is and is not possible, but i was wondering is there a thrid party software that call allow you (the admin) to set these sort of rules for each account? or can this be achieved another way?
Thanks,

I'm pretty sure creating a standard user account in Vista will meet most if not all of those requirements, i.e. will be able to create/delete files and folders in own account, Documents folder etc, but I don't think anywhere else without administrator password so system and program files are safe. Nor can they install programs without an admin password. Not sure how online gaming would be affected...

See kiosk mode maybe.

Ought to slow the little runts down a bit.
Consider sandboxie or other roll back applications.
To be honest if they are smart enough you may be better off with a computer without a hard drive and just run an OS from a CD.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

hi guys thank youfor your suggestions, but i know it is possible to do this as my work computers have been locked down but i dont know how and the IT here based off site.
in xp there is something like gpedit.msc which allows you configure what a user can and can not do within their accounts and i want to do this in Vista, there must be a way.
Any more ideas please?
Thanks,

Some things never change with M$ policymakers. Neither secpol.msc (the Security Policy editor) nor gpedit.msc (the Group Policy Editor) are included on 'Home' versions of Vista (or XP, for that matter!) You have to be running Vista Ultimate, Business, or Enterprise Versions.
Consider using Windows SteadyState (no idea if it will work with Vista), or else suggest to your brother to make new friends who won't dare ask him to share/use his computer.

lol ill tell him to ditch his neighbours lol
ok say he was to upgrade to Vista ultimate then how would you go about doing this? is it possible, or what if i gave him a machine withxp pro sp2 already installed on it, how can with achive this?
is there a site that tells you what changes are made to the system if you were to modify something in gpedit.msc?
for example if you change "this string" you will not be able to right click on the desktop.
Thanks,

Thank you guys, i will let him know about SteadyState, i also found something else on another site if any one is interetsed then heres a link
