I just installed my all in one HP photosmart. I don't want to use the cd it came with b/c I know I'll be using more than one printer/scanner on this pc. I'd like a free lightweight scanner software that can interface with my scanner.

I doubt you will find any free lightweight scanner software that can interface with your scanner. Why? Who isn't afraid of big lawsuits from the patent/copyright holder - in this case the all-in-one scanner manufacturer?
Windows twain drivers will recognize the scanner as long as it's certified for use with Vista but it will not provide you with the all-in-one functions for it. Only HP software will do that.

I don't need the all-in-one functions really, I just need a program that supports any scanner. I can already print. All I need is a scanning program that windows launches when I went to scan something. It doesn't have to be all in one specific

The lightweight client you ask for is Irfanview. It's freeware and is rock solid.
Enjoy!
Best little graphics program i have ever come accross only 1 meg in size and kicks ass!
Enjoy.
you'll fine it here: http://www.irfanview.com/
you may want the plugin pack also that's free too.
Please note: you will still have to load the manufactures driver for the scanner but Irfanveiw will take care of the rest.
Stay Smooth.
