Laptop wont obtain an IP address from router

Specs: Windows Vista
Hi there,

A couple of days ago I turnt me laptop on as normal only to be denied access to the internet. I have tried rolling back the laptop to a previous restore point in case something had changed since then but nothing.

The laptop is connecting to the router (windows tray icon notes connection but only to the LAN and not the internet) however it is not obtaining the correct IP address and just sits there with a 169...etc number.

The rest of the computers in the house are able to connect to the router (hence being able to access this forum), so I'm guessing its an issue with the laptop.

Any suggestions???

Thanx in adavance

wanderer, thanx for the reply. I forgot to add that it was wifi and that it worked fine when hard-wire connected to the router. I was thinking it might have been a driver issue for the laptop so spent sometime trying to find the exact driver for the laptop (the laptop manufacturer has 3 drivers for the wifi card for the exact brand of laptop - how stupid is that - so had to find the exact one in the laptop).

Downloaded the driver from my main PC, booted up the laptop to transfer over the file and the thing connected to the network and internet all fine.

So no idea what the problem was - how can the thing not work for 3 weeks and then suddenly spring back into life.

Thanx again for your help - we'll just have to see how long it lasts before deciding to die on us again
