laptop turns on to balck screen

Specs: Windows Vista
When I turn on my laptop (it's an Acer Aspire 4530) it opens to a screen that says it didn't shut down properly and asks me to choose between three different safe modes and starting windows normally. No matter which I choose, it opens to a black screen where I can't access anything. When I hit ctrl-alt-del, it comes up with an error message saying it couldn't open the task manager.
I don't really care about fixing it, since my grandmother told me I could use her old laptop and we have a desktop in the basement, plus I plan on getting a new one for university in the fall, but I really want the documents off the Acer. I write a lot of stories and (stupid me) I haven't backed up my computer since June.

Google for Hiren's Boot CD. download the program and using another computer with a CD burner in it, create the disc. Then plug a flash drive in the laptop and boot up the laptop with the Hirens boot disc. It has a Windows Explorer program you can use to look around the hard drive and copy the files to the flash drive.
