Hello,

I am using this PC (bought in Switzerland) with a Swiss-French keyboard layout (QWERTZ).

However, I have reinstalled the PC in order to eliminate this problem, but now it has reoccurred. It doesn't seem to be linked with any particular program I install, nor does it make a difference if I use the internal laptop keyboard or external wireless one. It's a problem that randomly started, and I don't know how to resolve it!

What happens is:

- The dead key ` doesn't register, and just puts a circum-flex (^) on the letter (which is the symbol on that key when Shift isn't pressed)

When I press the exclamation mark key, it automatically prints a " after it, once I press another key, so [!] [space] becomes [!"] (without the square brackets.

It's extremely annoying having to press backspace every time I want to put an exclamation mark!" < !!!

Can anyone help? Thanks.

I think that's about the best you can get with the software emulation for the KB. The physical keyboard layout are hard-wired into BIOS for sale in the country where you purchased it. BTW QWERTZ is incorrectedly spelled; it should read QWERTY from the first six letters seen in the keyboard's top first row of letters.

I assume you have the right language set?
With XP it is in "Control Panel/Regional & Language Options/Regional Options" but I've no idea if there is an equivalent in Vista.

If it is a BIOS wired thing it seems odd that the problem comes and goes.

XPUser - No, Switzerland uses a QWERTZ layout, not QWERTY, hence why I specified - and it is not emulated, the Regional and Language setting is set to French (Switzerland), which is correct, it appears to be a software problem/virus that is causing it to do this. A couple of weeks ago it happened when I installed Nero 7, and I uninstalled it and it resolved the problem. This time, it has come back without having installed anything...

OK I stand corrected with respect to QWERTY & QWERTZ as used by different countries :-)

Can you system restore back to the days before you installed Nero?

That probably would have worked, unfortunately system restore isn't active for whatever reason, and so there is no restore point available... is there some way of reinstalling the dll files that the keyboard needs to work? Or is that not possible?

Is it an ordinary keyboard or is it one with hot keys and other features which use software?

You have installed English Vista?

If so, you must set the input language and keyboard to SWISS.
Also, for the Satellite, you might need to install the swiss keyboard drivers from Toshiba for it to work properly.

http://www.toshiba-europe.com/

I have a French Satellite and run English Vista with French Input Settings. With XP I was able to select English as the input language on The French keyboard Layout but Vista doesn't seem to give me the same options (ou je les ai pas trouver parce ce que je suis trop null!)

The keyboard settings won't affect your language input if you are typing in English and your language format and display language will still be English.

And the àççènts are kinda cool.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

No, I bought it in Switzerland and it has the Italian language version of Vista on it. The layout and input settings are all correct - but the keyboard is inserting characters where it shouldn't, and it's not because it's on the wrong layout, it's a software bug but I don't know how to resolve it!"

The keyboard layouts for Swiss French and Swiss German are QWETRZ.

Italian is QWERTY.

If it is set for Italian that might be the problem.

Toshiba has online support at the site I linked in my other reply if you are certain it is a software bug but you'll have to register your your computer with them before you can ask any questions.
