Java does not work in Firefox/IE

Specs: Windows Vista
I cant seem to get Java to work in any browser. I've been following troubleshooters for the past year now, to no avail, and I'm getting to the point where I want to throw this computer down the block. I only use firefox, but java doesnt work in IE either. Let me know what information I need to supply. Thanks in advance for the help!

I don't know FireFox good enough to advise but in IE try going to Tools, Managed Add-Ons, Enable/Disable Add-Ons and make sure that Java is Enabled.

If you find it disabled then it is likely that you have a 3rd party Internet Security application that is disabling it for you in both browsers "for your protection".

thanks for the prompt responses!

I have Java enabled in both browsers, and checking for that has already been suggested to me. Java seems to start up, but then an error message pops up, saying that the applet failed to load, and the console comes up and gives me a log of the problem. On the Java website, they give a test page where they have a Java animation, and its not viewable to me. If it helps, I have CA security suite (its almost exactly like zone alarm, just marketed for computer associates). Also if it helps, I could post the error report given in the Java console.
