I'm sure you all get sick of answering this question but I'm going to throw it out there because you guys always give me good advice. I want to know if a particular laptop computer is a good buy. I'm not a gamer and will only be using the computer for surfing, downloading music and basic things. Here are the basic specs I wrote down:

HP Pavillion DV 6253c
15.4"
Vista Premium
AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-52
2GB DDR; 120 GB 5400 RPM
Dual Layer DVD+R/RW/CDRW
6.8 lbs
Price: $999.00

Thanks in advance!

Sounds fair......I wouldn't say your stealing it exactly, but yea thats a good deal.....

Whatever the sticker price of a laptop/desktop, assume 6-8% lower is cost. (at least at Bestbuy). before extras are added....

But isn't it better to have the extra RAM? I thought that was important and this one looked like it had a lot with the 2GB???

I apologize Sabertooth, for not knowing that much about computers; that's why I'm here. I don't even understand what exactly you are trying to say. Are you saying the Compaq will be a faster machine if I order it 'as is'?

Nah - you are fine.

My comment was for the most part directed at jam (the forum's unofficial dealmeister). He posted a good deal & I was hoping he'd come back with a straight link to it.

Only problem I see is brandnames like HP or Compaq (really the same company).

With their laptops, if something goes wrong, you have to send it in to their depot for repair. No local service centers. What this means to you as a consumer is about a week to ten day turnaround on getting your unit fixed should it malfunction. As compared to 2 to 3 days with a company that has local authorized service centers.

Also, in my experience, there is an unusually high failure rate on their equipment. A fellow that works where I do recently bought an HP laptop, it didn't work right so he exchanged it for another. Brought the replacement home, fired it up and within minutes the screen went blank and wouldn't come up with an image. Needless to say, he returned that one.....returned, for his money. He now owns a Toshiba laptop which he is very happy with.

Just my opinion but having worked on Toshiba and IBM laptops in the past and having dealt with HP/Compaq "support" (I use that term very loosely as my experince with them is they're a lot more concerned with selling than they are with supporting) I bought my wife a Toshiba. I'd rather pay a little more money up front and feel more secure in the knowledge that if something does go wrong, I can have it fixed and back in her hands quickly.
