My HP laptop DV9312tx came pre-loaded with Vista Ultimate. Never used the quickplay IR remote all these months. When I try to use it, found that it is not working. Traced the problem to the OS not listing IR port in the device manager. When I try to install the IR port automatically by search for hardware, it does not help. When I try to install manually, the best fit I find is IR serial cable. This installs also the IR monitor service, but the device fails to start. Can't find anything on HP support. Can'f find anything on the net to help install IR port - specially because I don't know the make of the IR device in the laptop. All the listed IR devices in Windows vista fail. How do I get the IR prot working? How do I find the make of the IR receiver in the laptop?

Check that the IR port has not been disabled in the BIOS setup.

There is no setting in the BIOS to enable / disable the IR port - have checked that out

The IR port found on an HP/Compaq notebook is consumer infrared port which means it will only work with a remote control you get from HP. This is not a real IR port per se. Read HP manual below.

yes - I had read this manual before I posted. I discovered the problem when I tried to use the remote in quickplay - it did not respond. I tried troubleshooting, and that is when I found that IRDA port is not listed.
How do I solve this problem ?

I'm having the same problem with my HP DV9610us. The "mini remote" is not working. In a chat session with HP support they had me upgrade the BIOS with no change. I flipped the batter over - still no luck. So they are going to ship me a new one. (Mini remote)

Wouldn't it be funny if it was just a dead battery.

Got the new remote from HP a few days ago.'

It works.

It appears the issue is the remote and not the battery.
