You don't give much info. Which firewall, doesn't sound like the Windows one, that lets pretty much everything through!
If you are using the Windows one, open the firewall dialog box, via control panel, click the advanced tab and at the bottom, click 'Restore Defaults'
To help with another firewall you need to tell us which one you use.

Thanks for your reply.
The firewall is part of the norton protection centre.
I turned this one off and the internet worked.
I also switched on the windows firewall (after disabling norton) and the internet did not work.
I also like to remove the norton anti-virus software and install up to date software but have been unable to do this.

Hi,
Its most unusual for the Windows firewall to stop internet connection, but it is not so uncommon for Norton to do so!
If you have 2003 or earlier version, & want to remove it, you should use their removal tool.

If you simply try to use Add/Remove to do it, you will likely have bits remaining.

Windows Firewall does not stop anything outbound from your computer. Highly unlikely this would be your problem.I would suggest that Norton firewall is still giving you a problem. Just turning it off does not solve the problem. Get the uninstall tool mentioned above and get rid of it. Test your system only after complete removal of Norton.
