Hello again. I have attempted to install Vista RC1 onto a second hard drive (which has two partitions) to dual boot with XP. The installation went fine, but now when I boot up - I get a selection screen and the default is currently Vista - but Vista won't load.

I get this error:

"\windows\system32\winload.exe

Status: 0xc0000001

Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt. "

It suggests I use the DVD's repair feature, which I have done twice, but without success.

I installed by booting up into the RC1 DVD, not by running the DVD from within Windows XP. Could it be that I should install a dual boot configuration from within Windows XP?

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

thanks,

-travis

That's how it's generally done. Boot into XP, pop in the Vista DVD, select 'advanced', then choose which partiton you want it to install to.

This is what I figured. Except it turns out I downloaded the 64-bit DVD because I have an Athlon 64 processor. However, I found out that you cannot install the 64 bit version from within a 32-bit version of XP.

Maybe it's not possible to dual boot 64-bit vista with 32-bit XP, no matter how it is installed? They might have been my problem...

Downloading the 32-bit DVD now. Hopefully that will work.

"I found out that you cannot install the 64 bit version from within a 32-bit version of XP."

But you could boot from the 64-bit Vista DVD and install it that way & that would not have interfered with the 32-bit XP.

Here is something you can try at this time. Assuming your XP installation is on C: and the Vista installation is on X:

Copy the X:\Windows\System32\winload.exe (Vista Installation) to
C:\Windows\System32 (XP Installation)

Then edit XP's boot.ini file as follows:

Original boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Vista"
/NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF /FASTDETECT /USENEWLOADER

New Boot.ini:

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF /USENEWLOADER
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Vista"
/NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF /FASTDETECT /USENEWLOADER

As you can see (from above), the /USENEWLOADER switch was added to the XP Installation.

Well, I seem to have run into some sort of obstacle. After installing the 32-bit Vista from within XP, I get the same error message about not being able to find Winload.

My Windows XP installation is on a drive with the designation I: (something that happened last time I reinstalled Windows...) Could this be causing a problem.

And Sabretooth, when I open my boot.ini I see this message:

";Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options."

And there is no Vista section in the file that looks like this:

"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows Vista"
/NOEXECUTE=ALWAYSOFF /FASTDETECT /USENEWLOADER"

Any idea what I've done wrong? I also now have three "Windows.old" folders on the drive I'm using for Vista - which are just replaced installations of Vista.

Hrmph.

p.s. I read that "secret letter from Iraq" the other day - it was outstanding...
