Is your computer in sleep mode or hibernation at 3 am ? If so, you should have a wake on LAN option that you can check which should first bring the computer out of standby.

my computer isn't in sleep mode or hibernation at 3:00am but it's not on either. does the computer have to be on during this install? i have my computer set to never go to sleep or into hibernation. even if the computer has to be on during the installation shouldnt it start to install these updates the next time i turn the computer on? i swear at one time it used to install these updates by itself or when i turned the computer on the next time. what happened that it doesnt do this anymore? i have some of my windows options turned off, does this have something to do with this? ( in programs and features)

You should have it set for it to install updates automatically. If you have your computer off how do you expect it to download the updates and let you know it is installing updates. How do you gain access to the internet when the computer is off?? So in order for you computer to install the updates automatically you have to keep you computer on and let it do its thing. If you keep it off during that time it is not going to install anything.

Beginner1 has explained that you need to have your computer turned ON at 3am in order for it to download.

Your simple answer here is to set the auto download to a time when you know you will be online on a daily basis.

Simple arithmetic should tell you that if you are not connected you cannot download and when the time passes the set time the computer couldn't care a damn... it will just wait for the next set ad lib.

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!
