I put Vista on partition E and XP Pro on C drive. Vista wiped out XP Pro. I reinstalled it and that wiped out Vista.
Does anyone know a way round this problem?
After several attempts to correct problems I now have 4 folders for Windows [XP Pro] and can't get rid of them. I only need one.

I can't tell you why the above happened because it doesn't seem plausible if all that you truly did was what was described in your thread.
Here's a question that might help solve the mystery. Where (partition) & what are the names of these 4 "XP Pro" folders?

I did a dual boot install and Vista took over C: drive and moved xp to D: drive. It seems that Vista assumes the position as the dominant O/S. I didn't try an uninstall, I just wiped the drive.

Hi per,
I have deployed several installations of Longhorn...cough....Vista (Beta 2 included) & there is the option to specify the install path which is what I do all the time and have yet to encounter the domineering or overlapping behavior alluded to Vista, so I'm not 100% sure I have an explanation for the occurence.
However, my thinking is that the upgrade option is being deployed during the install as opposed to manually specifying the install partition or directory.

I installed Vista on E [ new partition of C drive].On start up it offered both XP Pro Media Centre and Vista, but only Vista would work, the other being corrupted. I tried to reinstall XP Pro but it would not allow me to use the same folder in the C drive and so I had to name the new install Windows2. That went wrong and I ended up with Windows 3 and Windows4 [ the last one is the only one in working order]. It gave me no opportunity to repair at all, except using floppies and this PC has none. Installation of XP Pro destroyed Vista.
I am now left with the 4 windows folders, no Vista and just want to scrub the whole drive and start again but it will not allow me to do so.
I know it sounds like the absolute amateur but that's not the case. The PC is new, Vista ready and something in Vista causes terrible problems unless I upgrade and lose XP Pro completely

I used Partition Magic to format C as Windows would not do it!! Now it's clear again. After all the problems setting up Vista I'm not in a hurry to retry it.
Please be aware that even following the instructions to the letter this can happen to you.

This is why MS suggests you do not test Vista on a primary machine. I did the upgrade and was not given the option of which partition to install to. Vista commandered C: and moved XP to D:. I didn't try an uninstall as I have no intention of using Vista. I didn't continue the test as the upgrade had too many problems that I just didn't want to take the time to solve. I did do a clean install but had problems with the IP connection as I was using a USB wireless for 1 connection and a PCI backup that did work. I will wait for all you super-testers to clean the bugs and maybe try it later.
Good luck guys.http://computervitals.com/

. Vista look like it's going to be cool but the BETA-2 version sucks, in my humble opinion.
Not being a BIOS interactive OS it just wants to dominate too much
Tomorrow the Stars!
