Hi All - i recieved the Beta 2 copy of VISTa, so did a few of my friends and we were totally blown away with the time it takes to install VISTA. We all have top end machines that well excede VISTA requirements and the install for me took 3 hours with the 32bit version. Any body else stunned at the time it takes to install VISTA??

It may not be what you typically desire in a basic home user OS, but its DVD format should have been the first clue as to what's in store for you. I made a remark about the install time too in a recent thread with respect to the 'minimum' hardware requirement posted by M$ and how somehow deceptive it is.

Also Beta 2 is a preview of the "Vista Ultimate" version of the OS & it presumably has the features that will be left out of the cut-down editions later when Vista goes Gold.

I was kind of suprised too. I could have installed any dvd based linux OS in less time and I consider linux rather slow. What I heard was MS was going to use an image based install. This is no image based install now is it. That might be offered in the final product if they don't get sued by symantec.

I installed the beta 64 bit version{build 5384} on mine and it took 48 minutes. have amd 4000+ cpu and 2 gb ram. does the 64 bit have that big of an advantage vs 32 bit?

My install time was also pretty good, <1hr, probably would have been quicker if not for a few black screens that just hung there (detecting hardware or something?)

I would suspect that >1hr installs are possibly more to do with specific hardware compatability issues than anything else. When i was trying to install to me raid 0 array install would take forever before it finally crashed due to multiple file errors.

Did you notice it took a long time for the copying or extracting files? or was it after that step?

I was surprised by the install time too.

What was scary however, was the heat that the HDD generated. My HDD was hot enough to light a match.

Yes, my 32 Bit install took about an hour also.

And the test system I'm using has the minimum requirements with a graphics card that is not "supported"

The 5384 build is so much faster to install and it runs like a dream too. Blame microsoft for not releasing it when they were meant to.
