IDE Controller ATA Config question w re to DVD/CD combo unit

July 24, 2012 at 04:12:43
Specs: Windows Vista, 4 GB
Is there anyone who can tell me where to find trouble-shooting information and the PROPER configuration of Drives/Controllers/Disks? i can not find it in my documentation, manufacturer site, or elsewhere online.
Unit Spec: Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5897, Vista 64 Bit, RAM: 4 GB, Processor: AMD 2GHz, BIOS: InSydeH2O 1.40, Mats---a (Panasonic) DVD/CD-ROM(RAM): UJ-850S ATA.
Currently, Device Manager is showing three (3) ATA Channel(s); one (1) IDE Channel, and two (2) Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller(s).
i am having intermittent trouble with the DVD-CD-RW combo drive failing to recognize various functions of CD (only). At present, i am only able to get it to function as a player of music cd's..
Thank you in advance for any leads/help.

Even though it at present only plays music CDs, the fact that it does read discs at all means the problem is not one of hardware or it's configuration, as that would prevent the drive from being able to play or read any type of disc, and would probably prevent the drive from even being detected by Windows.

When a CD drive won't read data discs (software etc) or any type of DVD when it should, it's usually because of "filter driver" errors in the registry. This can happen when you install, then later remove, any software which is related to disc-burning, DVD player software, or media players etc.

Thank you very much for responding. DVD is reading of all file types is A-ok. This is limited to (at the present) getting the CD to recognize other than music files. at present, there are no filters in the appropriate registry key to be deleted.
i had attempted the filter fix many many times... and various other fixes including microsoft's completeseries of fixes - all say the device has no error, but did/could not complete the tests the hotfixes asked it to do. Now i am working from a repair to Out-of-Box condition, and trying to verify, the IDE/Standard Dual controllers are properly recognized and configured. Computer management shows "CD-ROM 0, DVD (D:) No Media" but no blue bars or health status.....
i was asking if we can look at the device status as pertains to the IDE/Controllers - please.
