Huge Vista Problem

Specs: Windows Vista
LOTS of problems on a Vista HP Laptop.
1. Windows Live Onecare says
"The Windows Live OneCare service is not working or has stopped".
2. Control Panel doesn't show any icons and then stops responding.
3. Tried running services.msc but it doesn't run and then the computer stops responding.
4. Wireless networking not working.
5. Misc other problems.
6. Started in Safe Mode and tried to restore back to a few weeks ago - but it then wouldn't restart in normal mode (mouse showing on a black screen, nothing responding). Had to force a shutdown then restart in safe mode.

Really don't know where to start, there are so many problems..... HELP PLEASE!

Well thanks for that info, useful to know (I think my friend paid for it, so is that just tough or what?). But what about the other problems?
Also how do I uninstall WLive OneCare if Control Panel isn't working? Can start Control Panel in Safe Mode but am not allowed to uninstall WLOC from Safe Mode...
Help please!

Now Control Panel does start up but WLOC doesn't uninstall, and Services still won't run and then the machine freezes up and I have to force a restart. Anyone have any ideas please? Am going out now, but will look at problem again tomorrow. Thanks.

Well, no one offered any suggestions so I had to sort it on my own.

In the end I pressed F11 just after a restart and this took me into HP "System Recovery" (The computer is an HP Pavilion laptop). Then I followed instructions to reinstall Vista from the original factory settings. This needed no disks (I think it was using a recovery partition on the laptop) and was really easy to do although it took a while, and I obviously had to backup files first. Then doing all the updates took ages.

But now it works brilliantly, much faster again and with none of the problems it had before.
