test the following:

switch power supply with another one of same voltage and same connector
... try to boot

use current power supply and remove battery ... try to boot

If all the above fails, its your motherboard that went bad. Three years
old is ancient for a laptop. Motherboards can go bad within a few weeks of
purchase and when out of warranty ... at anytime!

Search Ebay for a new or used (working) motherboard from a GOOD seller. Install it yourself and save $.

Thank you for the suggestions. Actually, the power is on but the monitor remains blank forever. The power light remains on but the disk light goes on for a second and then off . I tried the first two options as you suggested but they did not work. A repair shop also suggested that motherboard might have been bad but it costs $500 and not worthwhile trying. Yet another repair shop tried to repair my laptop. The technician did not think it is the motherboard but he could not fix the problem after trying for several days. It is nice of him not to charge me anything.
