How to reduce brightness on my screen

Specs: Windows Vista Home Premium

How can I reduce the brightness of the screen? The white is a bit too bright, and causes a glare that is hard on my eyes.

You do this on the monitor. See those buttons on the front of it? Those are size, brightness and contrast. Or you may have a on screen menu, which using the up/down arrows gives you the same options to change

Wouldn't that be done via your monitor, and not through Windows?
I am sure there would be a setting on your monitor to adjust brightness and contrast. Have a play around with that. If you are using a laptop, perhaps refer to the user manual for the correct procedure to adjust brightness/contrast.

If none of those is your issue, you could try adjusting your graphics card control center in the display properties.

I think the OP is talking about laptop "screen", not monitor.

You need to be more specific about the hardware you are inquiring about.

... if its a laptop use the Function <key>

[press] <Fn> + <*sun> keys

... * sun key refers to picture on icon key which varies (combination keys brightness up/down) with different model makes.

... it should be on the top row of keyboard while <Fn> <key> is @ bottom left on mine!

Or give us the exact model number of the monitor and maybe we can come up with a user manual for it.

I have an HP w1907 monitor . . I finally managed to adjust the font to a larger size that is easier to read. Now, the letters are long and slimmer. And, seem distorted.
I can't seem to restore my monitor to what it was before the crash.

Thanx for the help . . this is driving me batty !!

Debarybabs, I would turn off your computer and monitor. Now turn on the monitor first then start your computer. If it looks OK as far as not being too bright problem is solved, If it's still too bright follow the instructions at the link below to reduce the brightness.

Babs, You would press the Menu button which is the left button on the front of your Monitor then use either the - or + button to navigate to Brightness then do this:

4.Press the Select button to select the highlighted item.
5.When a menu item is selected and its corresponding screen appears, use the + or – button to adjust the scale of the item.
6.Select Save and Return to save the adjustment, or Cancel or Exit if you do not want to save the adjustment.
7.Press the Menu button to exit the OSD.
NOTE: When a menu is displayed, if the buttons remain untouched for 30 seconds, adjustments and settings are saved and the menu closes automatically.
