I just purchased new labtop. I want to partition the hard drive (160G) into 2 logical drives to contain data for second one

How do I partition the hard drive on Vista?

Thank you for your suggestions.

I doubt you would have to do it for any reason. If you insist then consider http://vistarewired.com/2007/02/16/...

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

Try using partition magic or partition manager to partition your drive or use Windows Vista's tools to shrink the hard drive and then set the second drive active, unhide the first drive if it hides and then install Windows XP on the second partition. That way, your system drive will always be C on Vista and XP.

FYI

It's a known fact that Symantec Partition Magic (other than Paragon Partition Manager 8.5) will not work with Vista.

The only problem with Paragon is that the full working version cost $49.95. Don't try the demo version.

Thank you

After shrinking the size of existing logical drive, do I format the second drive?

You can if you want to, but you don't need to reformat it.

Vista has it's own partitioning function built in. Just go to Computer Management, then Storage, Disk Management. Right click on volume and select Shrink, etc.
