Most likely a hardware problem if Safe Mode won't start either. The two most common hardware problems are a faulty hard drive and/or faulty RAM modules. You can test them both yourself with a bootable CD.

To test the hard drive, use the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software for DOS which loads from a bootable CD. The links are here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm...

To test the RAM modules, use Memtest86. Download the CD ISO Image and create a CD from it. Then boot your computer from it: http://www.memtest86.com/download.htm

Perhaps you can use the portable version.

Indeed before trying anything like a system restore from the command prompt or other fixes, I highly suggest you test the hardware as Phil has mentioned, first. Because, if it is a failing hard ware, it is apt to keep crashing out on you while attempting the repairs, when it may be a hardware problem. I always test the hardware first when that is a suspect.
