I recently upgraded my soundcard from the onboard Realtek to a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme card, but I have since noticed that I can not record from the PC's own sound source! The only recording option I now have is my webcam's microphone. I used to use this feature a lot, is there anything I can do?
Thanks

Go into Vista's Sound Properties from the Control Panel & set your X-Fi card as the default device. From the Recording tab, right-click on any of the entries there & enable "Show Disabled Devices". You should be able to select your new card for recording.

Hi Sabre,
Thanks for the info and that's actually something I discovered when I used my RealTek onboard sound - there was no Stereo Out or Wave Out option showing anywhere but I eventually found it was hidden in the Sound control panel as that guide you linked me to explains, and I was able to sort it out.
However I've been back there after I installed my new sound card and I can't find anything :( the only recording options are Digital Sound Source, microphone or my webcam mic.
Someone I know who bought a Vista laptop about a year ago has this same issue. Are we no longer allowed to record from this source? I used to use this feature a lot on MSN Messenger using its "voice clip" function but now this is rendered useless.

Yup...I have been searching for an answer to this, but yet to find one.
I get MIC, Line in, and SPDIF. There is nothing in the record tab that allows recording of what is coming through the speakers that I can find. This is one of the reasons I take Vista off my machine and reload XP.

I don't think the reason is that cut & dried. If it simply is Vista being boneheaded & not anything else, I guess the gobs of folks & I who are able to record via the output of the PC sound card or "what you hear" using Vista debunks that.

What drivers are you using -- Creative's or the Optional Windows Update one?

Hi Sabertooth,
I am using the Creative drivers that came with the card. There aren't any updates to them at the Creative site.

Oh well....
I haven't been keeping up with Creative ever since I sold my Audigy card. Ironically, it happened after I upgraded to Vista, but sometime before they got outed for deliberately crippling pre-Vista cards to boost sales of the X-Fi series.
And thanks to the Daniel Kawakami episode, I've decided to NEVER BUY OR USE a Creative card ever again!

Yup, I bought the card I have just before the Daniel K issue and will also never purchase a Creative product again.
Maybe I'll just get another card and hold this one as a backup for family members who are going to stick with XP.
Thanks

Hey, I had the same issue also. I tried the show disabled devices but that only works for some. It's being caused by the soundcard running on vista. For some soundcards they'll make a driver update for it to work with vista, but for others you're out of luck unless you downgrade to windows XP. As for me I'm stuck not being able to record stereo mix until I downgrade SOON.
