Comment:

When I was searching for a file it came up with references to loads of files that I have deleted a while back. Where are these references kept. I've looked in the usual places including hidden folders, sub folders, protectd operating files and the registry. They must be somewhere...but where. The files have gone (as far as I can see) but the refernces to them remain.
Thanks

The search results tell you where they are, don't they? You can also right click on it, left click on properties and find target if it's a shortcut.

If only things were that easy! Clicking on Properties tells me where the file used to be. The folders and the files that were in it have long since been deleted. So there is no file and no folder but still the search tells me that it exists...totally confused as to where this reference is being stored.

An extra bit of info. All the files get listed under "Communications" in the search box.

When you delete files, they are not really deleted. Deleted files goes to the Recycle Bin and stay there until you flush or empty it out.

That's the first thing. Did you empty the recycle bin? Can you give us an example of some of the file names? Have you used the registry search tool to see if the they are listed in the registry? Have you checked the \temp or \tmp directories?
