Comment: Hbernate/sleep mode on a DESKTOP was a disaster on XP. Has the situation improved in this operating system?

Reply: (edit)XP hibernate (S4) and standby (S3) AND Vista sleep (S3) and hibernate (S4) are based on the OS manipulating the power-saving states of the ACPI specifications. To that end, MS is still issuing MSKB as new problems are reported to their attention. i_XpUser

Reply: (edit)I did not have hibernate/sleep mode issues on my DESKTOP running XP & do not in Vista but I hardly ever invoke the commands anyway. In reality, these features primarily benefit notebooks & offer hardly any advantage to desktops.

Reply: (edit)I had occasional freezes after hibernate but the XP forum had many threads dealing with problems in these modes and it was the forums conventional wisdom that those modes only be used for notebook computers otherwise you were inviting trouble.

Reply: (edit)Why are people always so keen to stress that Hibernate and Standby are not any use whatsoever for Desktops? If I have to go out at short notice, and I'm in the middle of something on the PC, I think it's great that I can just goto the shut down menu, tap H, and then leave the house safe in the knowledge that it will power down the PC, and when I come back I can carry on from where I have left off. I've not ever had one problem with Hibernating on my desktop machine.
