We got this laptop for my 17yr. old last summer but I do the maintenance on it and updates. Yesterday he got a notice about a windows update and said yes to the download and install thinking it was OK to do it on his own since I wasn't here and it did part 1 and 2 I think he said and then re-booted and took like 1hr. for part 3 then when it got to the desktop it said service pack failed to install but I am using it now to post and it's working fine.

I went to windows update and for yesterday in the history it says vista service pack 1 failed to install (KB936330) so what should I do about this?

This might not help, but you could try a manual download of SP1 here.

look, when i tried to instal sp1 i got tons of issues. in the end the best solution which worked for me was:
download sp1 as a standalone
make a fresh install of vista and right after that install sp1

sometimes sp1 doesnt like other softwares

when i installed sp1 it took around 20 minutes to install all updates.

I don't think I can make a fresh install of vista, don't have a vista disk only the recovery disks we made and the E drive with the recovery on it. I have no clue how to install and OS or anything so will try the manual downlaod and if that doesn't work then will leave it for now. Mary
