Subject: Help needed with Admin account...OS: VistaCPU/Ram: 1.67, 2 gig |
Comment: Hello, I've been seeing alot of info on how to run vista as an Administrator. Using Command prompts to enable the account, or right clicking on an application and choosing Run as Administrator. During Vista setup, I created an account and when I look at it in control panel, under user accounts, it shows that I am an administrator. So what would be the difference between the 2 accounts if there is one? Thanks in advance.

Reply: (edit)I think what you are describing is Vista's new UAC. Basically, the way Vista is set up by default, every program that is run runs as though it were running in a "limited account" (remember those from XP). Also, actions such as editing system settings require you to confirm. Finally, some commands (in the command prompt) are prevented from running completely. Since you set your user name up as an "administrator" account, you have the ability to side step these security precautions by (one example), right clicking a program and selecting "run as administrator." A regular user account does not have this ability. -Ryan Adams http://RyanTAdams.com

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the replies Cobra R and RTAdams89... So the first account I setup as Administrator, does it have the same ability as the disabled account, "Administrators"? Or is it more less like a Power Users account even though it is specified as Administrator. I guess I'm confused at the fact that the Administrator account is disabled in Vista... for what reason?

Reply: (edit)By M$ design the true built-in administrator account is disabled by default. You can enable/disable it following the liknk below. http://technet2.microsoft.com/Windo... Since you asked "for what reason" ... In Windows XP, everybody was made the Omnipotent administrator. It turned out to be too dangerous so M$ learned from it and went the other way round with Windows Vista. I suggest you click on the link below to read about The Omnipotent Administrator in order to better understand the problems with XP and why we now have UAC in Vista. http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3672_7... i_Xp/VistaUser
