I recently switched main boards on my machine and now my headphones do not work. Though it should be noted they did not work before the main board switch.
I do not think it is a hardware issue because they work in Linux before and after the main board switch so I believe Vista is at fault somehow.
Currently in Vista a 'Digital Output Device (SPDIF) High Definition Audio Device' shows up under the 'Sound' category in Control Panel. The headphones are physically plugged in but Vista does not recognize this connection. It even tells you where and what port you should plug the headphones into. This link found a forum with the same issue
http://www.flickr.com/photos/100970... is exactly what I am seeing.Other items:
Speakers work fine.
The volume is turned up.
Headphones are in working condition. I even tried another pair just for kicks.
Driver is current.
I am really am at loss of what or how to troubleshoot next in this issue. Is this somehow a confriguration done when Vista first installs? Any other suggestions? Thanks for any help you can offer.

I have the same problem. The mic and headphone ports on the front do not work in XP or Vista. In linux they work fine. Mine is Realtek audio.

So it simply does not work?
My audio is Realtek ALC885. Just another reason to switch completely to Ubuntu...
