OS: Windows 98
CPU/Ram: unknown
Model/Manufacturer: home built
Comment:

A neighbor has just purchased a computer that has Vista installed on it. Her former computer used Windows 98. She has a lot of files on the old machine that she wants to transfer to the new one.
If the hard drive is removed from the Windows98 computer and installed in the Vista computer as a slave will she be able to access the old files?
Thanks

It can be done mostly by taking ownership of files & folders on the old HD. One thing your neighbor needs to be aware of is voiding the warranty that comes with new OEM PC.

Thanks Xp/VistaUser and that was fast!
I will pass on what you had to say.
Now she will have to decide if she wants that old information or the warranty.
I had not thought about the warranty.
Unless there is a better way I will suggest she copy the most important files to CD's and x-fer them to the new machine.
Thanks again

I agree with you - burning files to CD is the far less problematic than having to:

(1) open the case,
(2) tweak with cables
(3) install the old HD
(3a) Boot to BIOS to change few settings.
(4) Turn on the PC and pray it will boot
(5) Pray that Windows Disk Manager will recognize the presence of the old HD
(6) Take ownership ...

the list goes on and on.

You can also try the method of putting the 98 drive into a USB external case and go from there

Keep the old stuff running

Another great suggestion. I just happen to have an USB external case in my spare parts.
I think that I will try that first.
Thanks LinuxOS2

Yes by all means try that first - it's faster and less aggravating than taking time to select files & folders for CD burning.
