All information is here:
http://support.gateway.com/s/softwa...

Tap F8 key as you boot up and you will get list of options displayed on your screen.
Exercise the option you want.

In that case you will probably need Windows Vista CD/DVD. Do you have it?

If you do NOT have as is normally the case then you could try downloading the "Windows Vista Recovery Disc" from here:
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windo...

You will need to install a bit torrent client like uTorrent to be able to download as the links are torrent links.
The links below shows the limited actions you would be able to take with such a disk:

i have tried all that. basically when gateway, dell or other companies create a recovery partition now they have a specific spot in the "repair" area of the partition when booted to it (which is only in the repair of the image only or factory recovery cd) that is tailored to their image recovery. dell there is command line stuff to recover it in case the image is damaged, but i was wondering basically if there is a similar way for gateway. i am however just installing a fresh copy. the entire boot sequence is jacked and the "start up repair", chkdsk, or anything else wasnt even seeing an issue. im thinking virus related. thanks for the replies though.

Thanks,
Jason

The "Windows Vista Recovery Disc" I mentioned does exactly that for all OEM installs including Gateway. You obviously did not read the links I provided. The advantage is that it does not rely on anything that is on the hard drive. It boots of the CD and then you can attempt various repair options that way.

However, all that is a moot point now as you are doing a re-install.
This also suggests that you do have a copy of the install CD/DVD which you did not tell us about.

You might have received different advice had you told us about it.

Good luck with your re-install.

"...i have ran a chkdsk and a startup repair from the vista disc..."

... "jasonl" are you saying that you are using a created recovery cd/dvd?

... from experience even using one with a "jacked" main partition proved unsuccessful untill the main partition was removed (leave the recovery partition 'intact')

... then try <Alt> <F10> <keys>
