|The "Windows Vista Recovery Disc" I mentioned does exactly that for all OEM installs including Gateway. You obviously did not read the links I provided. The advantage is that it does not rely on anything that is on the hard drive. It boots of the CD and then you can attempt various repair options that way.|
However, all that is a moot point now as you are doing a re-install.
This also suggests that you do have a copy of the install CD/DVD which you did not tell us about.
You might have received different advice had you told us about it.
