Formatting HDD

Western digital / 2tb
May 8, 2010 at 07:47:43
Specs: Windows Vista
Vista will only format to 54% then stop and I can't get it to finish so I can use this drive?? Any suggestions?

Few more things, I was ableto get it working on Windows 7 had it installed seemed ok but I had to many problems getting 7 to reboot half of the time it would just lock up. So I formatted this drive using the 7 disk, unplugged went back to my orginal drive and reinstalled Vista. When I use the Vista disk to try and format the 2TB drive...keeps saying can't format disk.

Have you tried formatting you drive using another utility (FDISK or Gparted?) and then installing vista (without using vista to format?)

No I havent I will try that next and see how it goes. I've never used those programs before, hopefully I can figure it out. Is there any site that offer tuturiols on how to sue them? I'm sure it can't be that hard I just want to make sure I'm doing it correctly.
I get this error when trying to format vis Vista disk Windows error 0x80070057

So I tried FDISK through Vista and had the same result 54% and stops. I've tried everything other then taking it out of this cpu and trying to format in another. Still not sure why I can format using the Windows 7 disk and not Vista.

On some of the support pages, microsoft seem to reccomend creating a smaller partition in this occasion (like 1tb for vista, antother 1tb for anything else)

I cannot guarantee that may work or not, I dont have any drives big enough to test it on :P

Thanks, that was my next step. I kept telling myself if it
formats 54% then it should partition at least 1tb. I'll let you
know if I'm succesful or not.

Formatting only 1TB worked beautifully! Thanks for the push
in the right direction. My next task is setting up my 2x 150 GB
HD's in a RAID 0 array. That should be fun. Thanks again.
