hello i have xp on my main machine which i format using the boot from the cd method no problem
But i bought vista ultimate which i have put on the kids computer. i managed to install it no problem but now i want to format. so doing the same as i did with xp i get an option of format but when i click on it its far to quick normally takes half an hour at least and there is no blue bar telling you the progress. is there an easer or better way to format a drive and reinstall vista.. with vista you get the impression it is still in windows when you get the option to format

Grab your Vista installation DVD & insert the DVD into your DVD-ROM drive.
Reboot the computer. When prompted, press any key to boot from the DVD. Go through the install steps & choose the drive to be formatted as where to install Windows.
At the 'Where do you want to install Windows?' screen highlight the disk partition and click 'Drive options (advanced)'. Select the 'Format' option. All data on the drive will be permanently deleted. Choose 'OK'.
When the format has completed, reboot the machine & that takes care of the format issue.
