Subject: Folder Type Change Not PropogatingOS: Vista Home PremiumCPU/Ram: Turion 64 2GHz/1918MBModel/Manufacturer: Toshiba/Satellite A215 |
Comment: I right-click on a folder, select Properties, Customize, change the Folder Type & select "Also apply this template to all subfolders". Then Apply & OK. The immediate folder changes to the selected Type, and most of its subfolders change, but some (seemingly randomly) do not change. I have to hunt these down & change them individually. This seems like a real bug in Vista, but not much talked about on the M$ forums (TechNet, etc.). Generally, I find that many of the folders under Documents have a Type of "Music Details", even though there are no audio files in these folders & I specifically selected for all folders under Documents to be of Type "All Items". Just now I tried it with C:\Toshiba. Afterword, a couple folders (one containing a single exe file) have a Type of "Music Details", but one is in Details view & the other in Large Icons view. What's going on? How do I fix this? T

Reply: (edit)It IS a real bug in Vista. I have problems with a few of my folders remembering their settings. I set for "medium icons" and come back to it a while later only to see it switched to "list". It's only a select few folders but none the less, it's a pain. There was a fix for it, but it no longer works after SP1.... don't know why.

Reply: (edit)I agree with blackbill that it is a bug. The following is quoted from the link provided in Sabertooth post above: The exact cause of Vista losing it's memory on your folder view settings has not been found yet. This may just reset them for now to help Vista remember them again. It has been noticed that changing a lot of window folder view settings in combination with some unknown applications settings may be triggering this forgetfulness. Make sure that you do not have a setting in a 3rd party program set to clear the folder view setting cache when it is used. (EX: CCleaner - Window Size/Location cache option under Cleaner -> Advanced) Learn to live with it - forgot about what we had in the good old days of XP. i_Xp/VistaUser

Reply: (edit)Sabertooth: Yes... that's it. It worked great prior to SP1, but after that it fails to work on SOME of the folders I have. I have re applied the fix several times since.... to no avail.

Reply: (edit)OK, I don't have SP1 installed, yet, so that's not an issue. (When I installed it last March, it trashed my system, so I had to reformat my hard drive & reinstall EVERYTHING all over!) My basic issue was not so much about Vista remembering the settings but more about Vista making the settings in the first place - to all the subfolders. At any rate, I tried the registry file provided by stevecn70 (see link, above), and then I manually changed the Pictures folder to use the Pictures & Video type. Now everything seems to be exactly the way I want it. So we'll see if it sticks... Thanks, all, for the suggestions & pointers! T
