Okay, a stupid question, but here goes...
I want my folders to default to the LIST view when opened.
In XP, this can be accomplished by right clicking in a folder window, selecting VIEW>LIST then going to TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS>VIEW>APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS.
This method doesn't seem to work in Vista. I still get DETAILS or LARGE ICONS or LIST as the view from folder to folder.
Any help?
Thanks!

Vista is a new ballpark.

In XP you have five ways to view the folders and files in the right details pane: as thumbnails, tiles, icons, a list, or a detailed list.

In Vista you have six options: extra large icons, large icons, medium icons, small icons, details, or tiles.

If you don't like it, learn to adapt to it.

I'm not running Vista on this PC. I guess the info I gave you above is true when you use default Windows Explorer View. It is possible that you may or may not get a different set of view options if you use Classic Menus.

... I wasn't complaining about the avaiable views. I was trying to figure out how to get the "APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS" option to work.
XP allows you to select a standard or universal default for viewing folders... Vista seems to work the same, but the changes aren't being applied universally... The fact that once can select "apply to all folders" and it doesn't simply makes me scratch my head...

I had the same problem....went into a folder > alt > Tools > Folder Options > Apply to folders and it did apply the settings to some but not all. Maybe it's something to do with the type of folder.

Were the folders that didn't change on the same partition? Just a theory.

I'm still learning my way around Vista. All I could find is THIS.

I do not have that problem with my Vista installation. Setting up a prefered view from within the three partitions that I have on this machine - the changes was permanently applied to all folders.

Maybe you are doing this from "My Computer" - which is not effected by the folder changes stipulated at your root directory or another main directory level, since you don't have folders at that (My Computer) level so to speak.

Don't try to set this up from "My Computer".

- Navigate to C: or D: or whatever directory

- From "Views" select your prefered view.

- Go to "Organize"

- Then to "Folder & Search Options"

- Hit the "View" tab

- And "Apply to Folder"

That pretty much should be it.
