Fixing Primary Master Hard Disk Error.

March 1, 2011 at 19:13:06
Specs: Windows Vista
I have a Gateway with Windows Vista OS on it. It worked fine today. I left it running and when I came back a few hours later the screen was stuck on the Gateway screen with 2 options at the bottom. I pressed F2 and it went to an American Magatrends, Inc. screen saying that I had a Primary Master Hard Disk Error and to press F2 to resume. When I press F2 it won't resume. It makes a clicking noise. How do I fix this? I don't understand what's wrong. It was working fine earlier today. Please help!

That's not good, and unfortunately these things just go without warning. The clicking is the read head. I would recommend you stop trying to get it to start if you have data you wish to recover. Every attempt could make data recovery less likely. If the drive is physically breaking down (as yours seems to be), and if a basic recovery doesn't work, the recovery can get costly. So, I hope you have the important stuff backed up. You can test the hard drive, but if it's clicking loud, I would not suggest you do one.
