Got a friend who needs a firewall; however, the current free version of Zone Alarm, which is what we use, will not work.
Please guide us in the right direction to obtain a +free, easy for the public to use, firewall.
Thanks in advance!!!

So what I hear about the Vista firewall being one sided is not true, or is it two way but needs to be configured properly?
Thanks!!!!!!!!!

i can promise you, vista is so security tight, ..
Oh yeah - tell that to Mark Russinovich - he knows the ins and outs of Windows security better than anyone else.

no firewall is need
Sure - every badies in your machines are free to call home.

Right it's not true. Don't believe every rumors you hear especially from response number 1.

Yeah it's not easily done but it can be done.
Nice written articles to configure the outboard traffic are HERE and HERE.

"i can promise you, vista is so security tight, no firewall is need."
If you don't need a software firewall, why did Microsoft include one?!
Please think before posting. The ANI vulnerability is proof enough that malware can get into your machine. If it phones home, if you don't have an egress filtering software firewall, it's going to be able to phone home to the hacker.
For the record, while there really aren't a lot of choices in software firewalls for Vista other than Windows Firewall, I would still recommend once one does come out that's good for Vista, it would be best to go with something other than Windows Firewall. The addition of being able to egress filter is nice, but hackers will begin including code in their malware specifically to bypass software firewalls, and they will no doubt attack the Windows Firewall in this fashion first since it's the most commonly used software firewall on Windows machines.

Thanks everyone, and your comments are much appreciated - I tend to stick with the worst of situations, when in doubt, protect like there aint!!!!!!!!
Configuration headaches, boy did I find out, went to configure Norton Internet Security for a friend that has Vista, 1st I'm not used to Vista, every OS except, so turtle #1, configuring Norton is a mastermindicable feat even for the tech at heart!!!!!!!!! Then had to get used to Vista to find the settings, firewall, security, etc.
****I tend not to trust windows firewalls for some reason, like my own firewall separate from windows.
****I found out real quick, not many firewalls for Vista written yet, "Jetico" I think, skeptical though until Vist has been out a while and the kinks are ironed out of it in 6 mo to a year and service packs are issued and the kinks ironed out of the beta Vista firewalls separate from windows. Feel better with Norton although one royal pain in the keister to configure and a memory and space hog!!!!!!!!!!
How do they expect the general public to configure same!!!!!!!!
ON THE UPSIDE SHOUTING, I LOVE VISTA, I LOVE THE LOOK, THE FEEL, THE SCREENSAVERS, THE EASE OF USE!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks again and I guess we will all have to be patient and wait for the developers to render their firewall products in time. Oh how I wish I were a developer!!!!!!
Sorry so late in getting back; however, get off late from my reguar job and had a couple of tech jobs the last few nights.
Thanks!!!!

One more thing, am I correct in saying thateven if u are behind a firewal router (hardware firewall) u still need a software firewall, as we have been using both.
I would like some input on this in regards to Vista and the "hardware firewall" the router?
I was always of the belief u still needed same.
Any help appreciated, thanks!

"Feel better with Norton although one royal pain in the keister to configure and a memory and space hog!!!!!!!!!!"
I feel better with a well performing system.
And yes, you still need a software egress filtering firewall since SOHO routers only usually block unsolicited incoming connections.

I am afraid there may be more configuration headaches for you. First read my post over in XP Forum that should have been posted here.
In this case I discovered that NIS misused the functions of Remote Differential Compression - a Vista feature. It caused the machine's files copy, paste, move, & delete operations to be painfully slow. I fixed it for my client by working through various NIS configuration options despite NIS constant protests (client has his own reason why he won't get rid of NIS).

Another thing is NIS Anti-phishing features. You need to do something about it because IE7 also has its own. Having both enabled can cause problems.

Thanks guys, I am trying to orient myself with Vista.
I worked with the various settings for about an hour, my client also has her two kids, two (4) year old twins and is kind of the "kid" hangout for young and to teen stage kids, so everyone has their share of the computer, and I am graciously elected to iron out same.
By the time I left, a while later, the computer was back to its usual 3.0 gigahertz or better processor speed after the NIS configuration. It's been a while since I challenged or used NIS!!!! And I have actually seen other AV systems that has fixed what Norton would not!!!!!!!!! And caught what Norton would not!!!!
Another thing is we had to do the manual Norton updates as automatic would not work, nor would it work from the preinstalled program's update features. So, as I had to do with my own several years ago, go to Symantec's site and download the updates.
It is interesting, what is not taught in the books is in the field learning!!! And always something new!!! And amazing!!!!!!
Thanks again.

Good point about the anti-phishing features of both IE7 and Vista, not realized.
And yes, I don't like Norton and definitely don't think the general public is ready for the configuration issues; however for the most part it protects once u get it configured.
Thanks!!!!!

My issue with it isn't its ability to protect. My issue with it is even properly configured, it slows down systems way too much, and hacks the machine's kernel to provide the protection it does.

I know, it's a memory hog and that and takes up space and most of the time is a nightmarish uninstall. I liked Black Ice before it got holes in it, I liked the look and the ease. I like my firewall separate from my antivirus!!!!!!!! Although I have seen AVG catch and clean what Norton would not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish I had the brains of the hackers, if they r smart enough to hack into systems, lalala, they r either script kiddies or a step above, or the engineers, I'd make sure I was the head of my IT Dept. in charge of security.
Vista is fantastic though, once in about a year when the kinks are ironed out and more apps are writtent/modified to work with Vista.
Thanx!!
