Filezilla is a ftp program. It has both a server and a client application. If you are running a virtual machine inside vista such as vmware or virtual pc or qemu we would need to know that.

Best place to start is to try it from the machine you are running it on. The server has settings to allow any or all of the nic cards.
Use filezilla client to connect to the server using nic card's IP address. If it works then good.

Then try to connect to your external IP address if different. Remember that if you have a router or some modems you have to NAT the ftp connection. You would also have to allow ftp ports in all firewalls both inbound and outbound.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

........lol....you lost me around "...running a virtual machine inside vista such as vmware..."

i think that the best thing for me to do is invite my father-in-law over if its that complicated.....

all i did was download filezilla server, installed using default settings, and shutdown all firewalls, Obtained my external ip address, and attempted to connect from a computer in another location...

thank you for your suggestion but could you break it down a little more for me please...

Filezilla server has some options. One is how it looks for requests. Check setup and help file for that.

Start your testing by using the IP of your computer not the external IP. Might have to set the sever to look at local nic if you have two or more installed. The server has to work locally first. Don't try it from a wireless or neighbors or work.

This gets complicated because we don't know your setup. If you have a router or modem then we have to NAT and PAT the external address and port to the local IP. IN both directions. Remember it is a server now not a normal client application. You need upstream traffic.

FTP may also be blocked by your ISP but kind of unlikely.
