Files in the external HD not listed

April 18, 2009 at 01:19:49
Specs: Windows Vista

I have 1TB Western Digital Hard Drive(FAT32) connected to my notebook(HP Pavillion - Windows Vista) to back up my files. The HD had 924GB of data with just 7GB free space. It was functioning correctly till last week after which it showed only one file listed in the hard drive. The property of the drive still shows that the used space is 924GB. But I could find only one file in the drive.

Please let me know if any one have faced a similar problem before. If so please help me in fixing this issue.

... I had the same sort of issue in the past

... but it was an external "usb2" drive, for some strange reason I used a different adapter (still usb2)

... the device when detected did exactly as you stated "one large" file.... awwww!

... used recovery software , I recall a "truncation error" which it "fixed".

... as I have so much fix-it software remembering which one did the trick.....nope.

... I would suggest using "ndd.exe" first which is the "dos" version of norton disk doctor (boot up with it)

... I only use "that" usb adapter in dos as it does as stated all the time to drive/files in "gui"

"...pentathol makes you sing like a canary"
... got brain freeze

Do you realize you are looking for trouble? You should have stop filling up the 1TB (it's actually 935.5GB) once the free space drops to about 158GB or 17%. The 17% is the "minumum" threshold that assure the integrity of data files & folders whenever you perform any operation on the hard drive such as moving files & defrag.
