Hi I have just bought a new lap top (vista) and have a pc as well running on XP. Does any one know how to set up file sharing between the two as I have had no success. They are both working fine on a wireless network.

Thanks

SET IT UP IN XP
Firstly, set up a workgroup by right-clicking My Computer > Properties > Computer Name and change the default Workgroup Name to something more meaningful in your household, also make the Computer Name recognisable, e.g. MainPC or IBMPC. The computer should reboot. Now identify the folders/files you want to share and right-click them and select share and read or read/write access. A little hand should appear under those that are shared.

SET IT UP IN VISTA
Right-click Computer > Properties > Change Settings then change Computer Name and Workgroup Name. Set up the files to share as above.

To see or copy files, go to Start > My Network Places (Network in Vista) and the computers/folders/files should appear. In Explorer drag them from one PC to the other.

If you're using passwords, you will have to have the same account on both PCs.

Alternatively, on the Vista PC you could let Everyone appear in the Security Tab. In Computer, go to the drive or folder, right-click it > Properties > Security Tab > Edit > Add then type ‘Everyone’ (not the quotes) and below it select your preferences, e.g. Read or Full Control. Now Apply, OK etc. to finish.

If it’s still not sharing, make sure in Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center you have Password Protected Sharing ticked as ‘off’.

It says 'do want to turn on the fire wall and internet sharing'when I press yes it comes back with. 'Windows cannot start the firewall or ICS Internet connection Sharing'.

Can I get a repair for this?
