Hello,

Tonight I was using WMP11 to burn a CD. At about 12% completed, my entire computer locked up. Couldn't resolve with multiple ctrl-alt-del and had to resort to hard shutdown with power button. It seemed to have problems booting up - got stick at a black screen with white blinking cursor in the upper left corner. I had to use the power button to do a restart at that point. Went through this twice and then it booted up normally. However, now the DVD drive won't recognize CD's at all. The drive shows up, DVD's are fine but CD's are a no go, whether data, blank, or original audio. The DVD drive looks fine in device manager and when I had Vista look for updated drivers it found I was using the newest ones. I'm hoping not to have to reinstall. Seems the drive is actually working since it will successfully read DVD discs. Any ideas or thoughts on how to solve this would be awesome.

Thanks so much in advance.
Rae

Optical drives use different internal hardware to read and write to DVD or CD media. The drive can be just fine for DVD's but not for CD's or read CD's and not DVD's. Since this is an internal hardware failure there is no repair for the drive, the only choice is to replace it.. Repair costs would be over $100 and new drives are less than $30-50.

Microsoft have released a new web based diagnostics package which deals with common cd/dvd drive problems, this may help...

Your CD or DVD drive cannot read or write media
