DVD Drive not working

January 24, 2010 at 14:27:12
Specs: Windows Vista
My DVD drive has stopped working for a while and I can’t seem to fix it. I’m running Vista Home Premium 32-bit on Ace Aspire 5720Z. Anytime I eject and/or insert a DVD, the drive makes 4-5 rapid “clicking” noises before ejecting and directly after insertion. Device manager says the DVD drive is working properly, I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the drive many times and nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

EDIT: The DVD drive is: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N ATA Device

Device Manager has it's limitations - it can only confirm that the device is properly connected and that it's correct driver is properly installed.

It cannot tell you if a device is internally faulty or broken, which is what could be wrong with it.

Try different discs, if using home-made discs, try different brands. If no discs work in it I would say the drive itself is broken.
