I posted about 3 months ago at this post... "DVD drive not loading media"

Well in short the same issues still exist today... I took out the "drive" that no longer works so I now have two "working drives". The issue is when I load in the discs (anything) it attempts to load the media. The LED flashes for about 3 seconds then you think it is going to load but it doesn't- the LED lights keeps flashing. It never loads the media.

I confirmed both drives "work" by booting off both. I also attempted to remove the drive in safe mode but this did not help. I have also tried running the drive "solo" in Vista and no good. I have not tried to load the media in safe mode- I can try this... The master and slave settings are correct.

I am out of ideas and trouble shooting directions of why it does not work. Thanks for any pointers.

I had a similar issue ith an XP machine that was resolved by resetting the upper & lower filters in the registry - this Microsoft article describes it. Of course there may be differences with Vista, but it might point you in the right direction.

In the future, always give direct link to your old post like this. Otherwise no one will bother wasting time looking it up.

My hat goes off to johnr in Response Njumber 1.

johnr's comment about resetting the upper and lower filters in Windows Vista registry led me to discover this solution. This is based on my assumption that your copy of Windows Vista is an upgrade version. Is it?

Thank you XP user- I will direct my posts in the future.

No this is not an upgrade version of windows.

Yes I read an article similar to the M$ one and attempted to change the upper and lower filter settings. To my surprise I was unable to find them in the registry. So perhaps this is the issue... Also looking at the article both drives have no errors in Device Manager and the only error that occurs is when attempting to load the media. "unable to find disc..." not really an error just a fact. So this was a stumping point.

I also loaded Ubuntu and found the exact same event occurring- drive just sits their LED flashing. Ubuntu error was "unable to mount drive"- with or without a disc in the bay so same "error" as Windows.

So this lead me to believe it is hardware. Running Vista in safe mood, or editing the registry will not fix this issue. (And on that note I should have kept it in General Hardware rather than placing it in Vista forum and blaming windows)

Anyways the drive that is an issue is set as the master and the functioning drive is the slave. (I could try switching them?) Both are on the same IDE channel. I have made no changes in the BIOS. The cable itself is fine since both can be booted.

I am still at lose as an approach. Thanks for any further help you can offer.
