a few days ago i rebooted my comp and when i turned it back on i went to play a CD and it never registered. i looked in the device manager and there is a '!' on my DVD-R and CD-RW. under device status for both it says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" i tried updating the drivers but both a up-to-date. i searched for solutions but microsoft came back with nothing, big shock.

thanks in advance

I assume the jumpers Master/Slave are correctly set on the drives and they are attached to the correct connectors on the IDE ribbon cable. If you are not sure they are correct, check them before proceeding any further.

Then you should remove the DVD-CD drives in Device Manager and reboot.

This may solve your problem.

i checked both the IDE cables and jumpers, they were securely connected and set correctly. i removed them from a device manager and rebooted my comp and still no luck. it came back with the same problem as before

One more check may be necessary. Is your IDE cable 40-pin, 80-conductor type or 40-pin 40-conductor type ?

If you use the correct 40-pin, 80-conductor type IDE cable for the CD-DVD drives, then either your M/B or CD drives are defective or the connectors on the M/B or on CD drives side are defective or they are not receiving enough power because the power connectors may have come loose or power/ground pins corroded.

Hope the above helps.
