Hi, I've searched for some guides to set up a dual boot, but i cant really find a good one, can anyone suggest a good one, preferably one that 'you've' used and didn't have any problems with?

I have Vista Home Premium x64 installed, and i want to install XP Home to dual boot.

Is setting up a dual boot safe too? Will i be on my toes while setting it up in fear of losing my drive?

You should consider a virtual machine instead. I have almost never heard of any problems with them.

Virtual PC and VirtualBox are my best choices for you to try. They are free to use for personal use (read eula).

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Heya tyme1012,

I used the guide below to set-up my dual boot system:

http://www.syschat.com/dual-boot-vi...

This method usees the Vista partition resizing utility and doesn't require downloading a third party bootloader utility.

The guide is very well written and while I was following it I felt confident with my data integrity being kept intact. I installed XP alongside Vista without a hitch.

If you decide to follow the guide remember that if you have a RAID configuration and / or use SATA drives that you need to install the drivers so XP can load. I used nlite to integrate my motherboard drivers into the XP set-up cd.

Although I like virtual machines (VMWare) for testing purposes I find that dual booting my pc is far less resource hungry.

Start with a ntbackup with system state. Test the backup.
