Hello. I have several partitions on a 250 Giga HDD. The Primary partition= Vista OK.But the XP's disk changed from "D, primary" to "F Logical"and the XP wont boot.
This happened after using "VistaBootPRO" to set the default system. Can I get back the XP ? Thank you

XP C will read as XP D when you are on Vista. Just like Vista C will read as Vista D when you are running XP regardless of the primary partition or hard drive when running a dual boot.

Actuall Cobra the poster can't get XP to boot. Is it possible to use VistabootPro to revert to the original boot menu.

Before you go fiddling with the menu or setting the logical drive back to primary (you might lose Vista) you might like to look at the link:

Once I thought I was wrong, now I'm not so sure!

I had a similar problem awhile ago and corrected it by running the recovery console using the XP disk, accessed by pressing R. You should then type fixboot and fixmbr-see if that gets you back to XP.

If possible, let us know if this response was helpful or if you need further advice.

I used VistaBootPro without problems. The way I remembered doing it was to add an OS entry. See if you can find something like "Add an OS entry".

RWD1996: I have also used VistaBootPro without problems, except for the one time I mentioned(I don't remember exactly what happened now) where I had to use the recovery console. However, petreumusic probably has to get into XP to access VistaBootPro. That's why I suggested using the recovery console with fixboot and fixmbr.

Hello guys, Thanks for the kind replies.
I have tried:
-backup the old boot.ini with Vista Boot Pro
-fixboot and fixmbr
-copy a new ndtrl and boot.ini on the root of XP partition.
No result. The R(Recovery) does not work with my XP Pro SP2 CD.I have tried 3 times.

I repeat: the "D" partition disappeared. Now the XP is on "F"(See url print-screen image)

I think the problem is this "F" is logical and not primary. I will post back. Thanks

Have you tried my suggestion in #4? It must be done in Vista (atleast that was the way I had to do it).

Hello back
For instance no luck. The PC only boot in Vista. After replacing the XP's Ndtrl+boot.ini I've set VistaBootPRO again-to boot from XP.No chance.

Since my XP Pro SP2 Cd doesnt have one I have to "Build an XP-SP2 Recovery Disc" wich is not simple but I will try this.

Ewen provided a very good link about Vista.
My problem is more XP.

Cobra:I may agree with you, but the XP "flyed"from D to F. Now D is the CD/DVDrom drive.

Thanks all, I'll post back.I appreciate any suggestion meanwhile. Have a nice day.Petrumusic

You may have to first copy all of your data, if you need it, from the F partition which holds XP. You could then try the repair option with the XP CD, but that probably won’t preserve your installation since the F drive is no longer active. If it doesn't preserve the XP installation, you would then reinstall XP which should convert the F drive back to active and bootable. You could then reinstall Vista Boot Pro on XP and try to get it to work properly this time. I don't think that you would lose Vista in that case.

If possible, let us know if this response was helpful or if you need further advice.

Problem solved !1.I had to re-configure Vista boot Pro (remove/renew the info) 2. I used diskmgmt.msc to locate the XP's partition letter, 3. I manually copied the ndtrl + boot.ini from the XP cd on this XP partition. 4. Opened the boot.ini with notepad and set the correct partition to boot from.In this case partition D (4)

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professionnel" /fastdetect /usepmtimer /

Have a nice day. thank you all. Petrumusic

Hello everybody,
I've found a very usefull technique for those who don't have the Recovery console installed/ or the XP CD.

Note also that the Recovery Console cannot be installed when System Fails. Have to install it when your PC still runs.As a prevention.

Here download this RC.ISO
http://www.tweakxp.com/article36941...

mirror site/alternative
http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com...
Instructions :Don't just burn it a CD as a file, you must burn it as an IMAGE.

Using Nero for example, under the Recorder menu, choose 'Burn image' the navigate to the .iso, then it will be bootable.

Have a nice day ! Petrumusic
