Hi,

I'm running into some trouble with my new computer. I purchased a custom box from a long time friend not too long ago. Everything runs just fine until I start doing multiple things at once.

Last week as I was surfing the internet when the computer went into a blue screen with some error that I didn't catch because I was too busy staring at the screen with "fear" I might say. The computer then restarted on it's own and ask if I wanted it to start "normally" or in safe mode. I started it Normally and began doing my thing again.

Approximately 3 complete minutes later I decided to plug in my XBOX-360 controller to play Final Fantasy XI when the computer went into the blue screen yet again. This time I caught a message that said
"DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL"???

I googled it and that's how I landed in this website. Problem is, the last post for this issue was in '06 and was for Windows XP. There were talks about removing the RAMs and reseating them, or pulling all the internal connections and reconnecting them.

I want to consider that as my last step. I'd like to know if I can avoid that step at all? Please help. Any opinion/solution will be greatly appreciated!

I read the whole forum but nothing helped.

I found a little more information about my computer.

ECS motherboard (GeForce6100SM-M)

AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+

EVGA GeForce 8400 GS Pci-e graphics card (with 256MB of DDR2 video ram)

2 sticks of Corsair 1GB DDR2 667 Ram (2 gig system ram)

Western Digital 160 GB SATA Hard Drive (300 MB/s transfer rate)

450 Watt power supply

Also, when I unplugged my USB controller receiver, the BSOD occurred again, but this time with a different message. This one read

"wdf01000" or something close to that.

Now what?

Well, Microsoft just released a few USB patches for Vista. I'd try those.

Windows Update pulled them for me, so you might want to check there.

First, you should try to turn off the Automatically Restart option to be able to read the error messages and error codes that appear when there is a problem.

Then, talk to the system builder if he has done some overclocking in any of the components he has installed, e.g., CPU, M/B FSB, graphics chipset, etc..

Then, I may suggest disabling in BIOS some of the ports that you do not intend to use, such as COM ports, Parallel ports, etc. to free up some IRQs.

If your Windows Update is on automatic, then your Vista will collect the necessary updates for you. The updates that also include USB updates.

Hope the above helps.

First of all, you guys are awesome! I didn't expect quick response like this. Thank you!!!

I tried the link you posted, SuatCINI, but after the downloads and everything, a message tells me that "the update does not apply to my system"

"First, you should try to turn off the Automatically Restart option to be able to read the error messages and error codes that appear when there is a problem."

Can you please tell me step by step how to do this? I know my name says "MsGeek" but I'm not entirely familiar with all of these things. Thank you for your help!

Unfortunately I am away from my PC which has Vista on it. Therefore, I am not able to guide you through a step-by-step instruction of how to disable Automatically Restart option in case there is a crash in the OS.

Therefore, may I suggest you to wait for someone on a Vista PC to show you the way to disabling Automatically Restart option in Vista.

I am very sorry I am not able to help you more at this point.

SuatCINI, thank you so much for the helps. It is not a problem at all that you couldn't help me this time, at least you tried.

Demonking, thank you for the help. I did exactly what you posted, now I must wait for the BSOD (not that I'm anticipating this!) I will be posting the full message next time. I hope to get this fixed soon. I am tired of the computer shutting down every little step I make.

Can't remember if the BSOD will appear, becouse you selected the 'not to reboot' option, therefore I don't think it will try and restart. But you can check the Error Logs.

Side note: I loose my USB mouse whenever I plug in my XBox 360 controller. I'm not sayin' that's the issue in your case, but I doubt it can help.

The BSOD did show again, but it did not restart on it own. I was able to read and copy the whole error message.

Do you guys think that maybe my motherboard is defected? A friend suggested that it might be because of all the USB problems. But really, it's fine when I plug USB devices on the computer, the problem occurs when I unplug them.

I'm now forced to shut the computer down before I pull USB's off, and then reboot back up. Maybe this is better off that way, or perhaps there might be a fix for it?

I've tried running Windows Update. I looked for Vista's USB patches, too. Just seems like nothing helps. :( should I just replace the mobo to get this over with? Or is it Vista?

I really appreciate all the suggestions and help from everyone. I just hope you guys aren't getting tired of my questions and whining. :P lol thank you so much!

P.S: Happy late Thanksgiving to everyone!

Running a search on the internet for wdf01000.sys returned many results. It seems you are not alone on your specific problem.

Please see the following link for a probable solution:

http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet...

As advised in the forum, run a " SFC /SCANNOW " without the quotes to see if it corrects the problem.

What the 'ell? DRIVER_PAGE_FAULT_IN_FREED_SPECIAL_POOL? You're not running with Verifier on, are you?

On a[nother] side note, it DOES appear to be SATA related; there's apparently problems w/ nForce's Vista drivers. (That specific file is part of MS' Dynamic Device Enumeration; part of their Driver Framework.) Try downloading the latest drivers and give them a go. (You'll want the "Series 4," "Geforce6100/nForce405" package.)

I'm running the "sfc /scannow" under Administrator on Command Prompt.

I don't know what a "verifier" is, so I wouldn't know how to answer your question, Razor2.3. Although, this sfc /scannow says it is verifying?

I'm installing the NVIDIA s"Series 4," "Geforce6100/nForce405" package now, and I am hoping all of these will help because I hate wasting people's time. lol

Alright, verifier stated that "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

I downloaded and installed the package.

I hope this fixes the problems? By the way, Razor2.3,
DRIVER_PAGE_FAULT_IN_FREED_SPECIAL_POOL

This message does not appear in the error messages at all. Or well, I have not seen it.

I don't know what a "verifier" is, so I wouldn't know how to answer your question
Without getting too technical, Driver Verifier [Manager], or just Verifier for short, is a tool to help developers debug drivers and the more geeky to deduce which driver is misbehaving. One of the features of Verifier is a Special Pool. This pool has extra checks in place to detect memory corruption. It's needless for a correctly working system, and as you've already seen, can cause BSOD's if used.

What you're doing with Verifier on is beyond me, especially if you're not the one who did it. I'd turn it off, which you can do by running Verifier from the Run box.

[DRIVER_PAGE_FAULT_IN_FREED_SPECIAL_POOL] does not appear in the error messages at all.
Every stop code has an associated text string. In this case, 0xD5 == DRIVER_PAGE_FAULT_IN_FREED_SPECIAL_POOL. You wouldn't know that unless you knew where to look, or had symbols installed.

Razor2.3,

I did what you suggested, I clicked Start, Run, and in the box, "verifier" was already entered. This means that the person who built my computer had already messed with the verifier, correct? Otherwise, how did it know I was on my way to disable the program? :-P

I disabled it by "Deleting Existing Settings" in the initial dialog box. If this is not the right way, please let me know.

That's how I'd do it, assuming you rebooted afterwards.

You might even notice a slight performance improvement.

This s obviously a FRY's built machine. Don't have any suggestions other than don't buy another machine or parts from Fry's.

What do you mean "Fry"? I bought all the parts from Newegg.com and had him built the computer. I just don't know what else he did afterwards.

Anyway, just when I thought things are going well, comes another BSOD.

I'm thinking, maybe my Linksys Wireless Network Adapter isn't compatible with Vista? But on the sidenote, I am online right now using this device. I even updated the driver for it already. It takes me to the Blue Screen when I enter certain parts of the web, like checking a friend's myspace, or downloading from Limewire.

It's like I can't do anything without this Blue Screen interfering with my activities. It's not like I'm doing stuff that I am not supposed to on my computer. =[
