Gaming in XP is a tad faster than gaming in Vista even with SP1 installed. However, if the bulk of your gaming woes stem from a weak video card, then "downgrading" to XP is not the answer.

On the other hand, if you currently have a purdy fast video card & you are after the max FPS you can eke out of your gaming rig, you may consider running XP side-by-side with Vista as with a dual-boot configuration.

I'm not a gamer myself, but I wouldn't downgrade from windows vista to windows xp just for game performance. From what I have heard, Vista is improving for gaming performance.

Directx 10 in Vista but the better Directx 10.1 with API support is available via Vista SP1. See link below for more info regarding the enhancements.

One more thing I noticed is

CPU/Ram: amd 6400 be/4gb.

With Vista SP1 the full 4GB of system memory (RAM) will be recognized and reported in most place but not all - something that XP can't do. See M$ article below for details.

Another good reason to get & stay with Vista SP1.

It maybe reconginzed but it still won't be addressed to read 4gb. By running the Direct X tool dxdiag in the search, it shows that Vista is still only adressing 3.25gb instead of 4gb in a Vista SP1 32bit OS.

True but at least it recognized that there's 4GB installed in the memory banks, kind of a bit affirmative & a bit less confused, ya know :-)

As to RAMs don't try to exceed 4GB. If you do you will be told to remove them if you want to put the machine into hibernation. The article below also applies to XP & Server 2003 as well as Vista, both 32-bits & 64-bits.

I find it to be more confusing, because you have people thinking Vista is addressing the whole 4gb of ram when it isn't. As before at least people were getting a true reading of how much Vista is really using. Now it's giving people a false sense that they are really using the whole 4gb when they're not. Same goes for people that have IGP's on their system enabled as well using a whole 2gb of ram when they aren't under Vista SP1.

I think MS should have addressed the issue better by putting an * sign next to what it reads when you have 4gb of ram or an IGP being used by saying "Vista 32bit reads the memory you have installed, but cannot access the full amount of memory when using 4gb ram due to 32bit limits or when sharing ram from a IGP video display device."

I fully agree with you. Seriously, why not suggest that to M$ through the free technical support by phone, chat & e-mail for Vista SP1? More info here.

Regarding the 4GB memory addressing diatribe above, it is important to note that the discussion is almost exclusive to x86-OS based machines. Although, a user with an x64 OS such as XP Pro x64 (64-Bit) version using a 32-bit chipset may still become vulnerable to the memory address barrier.

Bottomline: Users would need a full x64 system configuration!

I see Vista being the last MS OS with this problem considering the next version of windows is suppose to be 64bit only with no 32bit support.

Thanx guys!! I was going to buy Vista for my new rig on the way home from work tomorrow. Now I have reservations...........again. Not only about the OS, but if I'm going to work on these (Vista) machines, I feel uncomfortable not owning a system without the OS. Got any suggestions? Thanx for your advice!!!
