Display/Resolution settings after reformat

After reformatting, I no longer have the option of any wide-screen resolutions under display settings. This is a huge annoyance since its a widescreen laptop. I've checked for updated graphics drivers and looked under "list all modes" in advanced display settings, googled for answers... and came up with nothing. Please help if you can, I'm going cross-eyed staring at the screen.
1st you installed the motherboard chipset drivers, then the graphics drivers, right? You either had them on a disc (or thumbdrive) or you downloaded the drivers from the laptop manufacturer's website after Windows was reinstalled, right?
