Disappearing deskop icons

This may be a common problem but I'm new to Vista:
Sometimmes--most of the time--when I copy a image file to the Vista desktop, it doesn't show up. It's there because I can see it in the Desktop folder. Sometimes the icon pops up later--sometimes it doesn't.
