Microsoft works is the freebie version offered by Microsoft or sometimes sold cheap with Microsoft word. The spreadsheet, and other programs work well in themselves but are not compatible with many other users software. Office is the much better product of the two and is sold individually, and in package sets. Office consists of: Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, Frontpage, Access, Groove and One note. The complete office package is rather expensive and the packages usually offer what most users need. You can certainly check out Microsofts website for more details. Office is much better than works, but there is also Open Office (free), depends on your needs. Check them out.
